Platform work is a global phenomenon and more complex than what is often understood as “uberization.” After all, the same platform can operate in different ways depending on the country or the region within a country. What is common among different cases is that platforms rely on a workforce composed of unemployed people, youth, elderly retirees, individuals with disabilities, caregivers, and those with insufficient income-generating occupations. Platforms do not create precarious work, but they benefit from its existence. In other words, the larger the available workforce and the smaller the reach of the social protection system, the greater the space for platforms to operate. With this in mind, this line of research will analyze the conflicts and disputes surrounding the regulation of platform work by mapping debates and regulatory initiatives related to platform work across the three branches of government and the three levels of the federation in Brazil, as well as through an international comparative study.
