Care work encompasses activities performed in both the public and private spheres. Thus, care work includes: domestic work, whether paid or unpaid; services provided by caregivers for the elderly and people with disabilities; services provided by healthcare professionals in hospital settings; services provided in daycare centers and nurseries, among others. The contribution of these activities to society and the economy is essential, hence the concept of “care socioeconomics”. However, a significant portion of care work, especially when unpaid and predominantly performed by women, remains invisible in official economic measures. To better understand and analyze the current landscape, this research line will focus on the national and regional specifics of care social organization. The relationships between families, the market, the state, and communities will be examined, considering: the care labor market; rights associated with paid and unpaid care; and public policies related to paid and unpaid care.
